For a huge share of local searches - "near me," a service plus a city, or the business name itself - what a customer sees first isn't your website. It's your Google Business Profile: the map pin, the star rating, the photos, the hours. Getting this right does more for local visibility than almost anything else, and most businesses only fill in the bare minimum.
What actually decides map pack ranking
Google's local ranking runs on three factors: proximity (how close the searcher is), relevance (how well your profile matches what they searched), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed your business is, both on Google and across the web). You can't change proximity, but relevance and prominence are both things a complete, active profile directly improves.
Proximity you can't control. Relevance and prominence you absolutely can.
Complete every single field, not just the basics
- Primary and secondary categories. Pick the most accurate primary category, and add every genuinely relevant secondary category - this directly affects which searches you show up for.
- Services and products. List every service you offer with a real description, not just a title. This is searchable content Google actively uses.
- Attributes. Small details (accessibility, payment options, appointment-only) round out relevance for filtered searches.
- Business description. A clear, specific description of what you do and who you serve - not generic marketing language.
Photos and posts: the parts most businesses skip
Profiles with regular, real photos consistently get more engagement than ones with a single logo image. Add photos of the actual team, work, premises or products, and refresh them periodically. Google Posts - short updates about offers, new services or announcements - keep a profile active and give searchers a reason to click through, and Google visibly favours profiles that stay active over ones that were set up once and forgotten.
Reviews and consistent NAP
Respond to every review, positive or negative, genuinely and specifically - a templated one-line reply signals as little effort as no reply at all. Never post or incentivise fake reviews; beyond the policy risk, it undermines the exact trust the profile exists to build. Keep your Name, Address and Phone number (NAP) identical across your Business Profile, website footer and any directory listing - even small mismatches (a suite number present in one place and missing in another) can quietly weaken local relevance signals.
Use the Q&A section proactively
Most businesses ignore the Q&A section entirely, leaving it to whatever random questions get posted. Seed it yourself with the genuine questions customers actually ask - pricing approach, service areas, turnaround time - and answer them clearly. This both helps real searchers and adds more relevant, searchable content to the profile.
