Search Google today for almost any informational query and there's a good chance the first thing you see isn't a link - it's a written summary, generated on the fly, with a handful of small source links tucked underneath. That's an AI Overview, and for a huge share of searches it's now the actual first impression your business makes, whether or not anyone clicks through.
What AI Overviews actually are
Unlike a single-answer chat tool, Google's AI Overviews are generated from Google's existing search index and ranking systems, then summarised into a short written answer with citations. That's an important distinction: the pool of pages it can draw from is effectively everything Google already knows how to rank, not a narrower set of hand-picked sources.
This means a page that doesn't rank reasonably well in traditional search results has very little chance of being pulled into an Overview either. The two systems are connected, not separate.
Why traditional SEO is still the foundation
This is the part that trips people up. AI SEO doesn't replace the fundamentals - fast page loads, clean crawlable HTML, genuine topical relevance, solid internal linking. It sits on top of them. If your site has technical issues that keep it out of the top results for a query, no amount of clever formatting will get it into that query's AI Overview.
So the honest first step isn't chasing AI-specific tactics. It's making sure the page already ranks well for the query on its own merits.
A page that can't earn a normal top result has almost no chance of earning an AI Overview citation either.
What content actually gets pulled in
Once a page is competitive, a few things noticeably improve its odds of being one of the cited sources:
- A direct, complete answer to the query sitting near the top of the page, not buried under introductory content.
- Structured data (FAQPage, Article, Organization) that makes the page's purpose unambiguous to a crawler.
- Content that matches the actual intent behind the query - informational content for informational queries, not a sales pitch dressed up as an answer.
- Freshness signals for anything time-sensitive, since Overviews lean toward recently updated sources for queries where that matters.
Why thin AI-written content backfires here
It's tempting to assume "AI search" means "write more content, faster, with AI tools." Google's helpful-content systems work directly against that instinct. Generic, could-be-anyone content, especially when it reads as obviously AI-generated with no real point of view or first-hand detail, tends to get filtered out of both traditional rankings and AI Overviews. The content that earns a citation usually reads like it was written by someone who actually knows the subject, not like a summary of other summaries.
In practice, that means fewer, better pages beat a high volume of shallow ones - a genuinely useful shift for smaller businesses that can't out-publish larger competitors on volume alone.
