Diwali is the biggest single shopping event on the Indian calendar, and it's surrounded by a whole festive season, Navratri, Dussehra, regional festivals, that businesses across categories can genuinely benefit from. The businesses that capture the most attention during this window aren't necessarily spending the most. They're the ones who started planning while everyone else was still thinking about it as "next month's problem."
Start planning weeks before the festival, not during it
By the time festive-season search volume and ad competition actually peaks, it's too late to be setting up campaigns from scratch. Creative needs to be produced, offers need to be finalised, and landing pages need to be built and tested well in advance. A useful rule of thumb: if the festival is the deadline, planning should have started roughly a month before it, not the week of.

Make the creative feel genuinely festive, not generic
Slapping a string of lights onto an otherwise unchanged ad rarely moves the needle. What actually resonates is messaging tied to the specific occasion, gifting angles, festive bundles, limited-time offers that feel tied to the calendar rather than a permanent fixture with new graphics. Regional relevance matters too: a campaign that acknowledges the specific festivals relevant to a given audience reads as more genuine than a one-size-fits-all "Happy Festive Season" banner.
Lean into WhatsApp and social, where the decisions actually happen
A significant share of festive shopping behaviour in India runs through informal channels, WhatsApp forwards, family group chats, Instagram browsing between other things, rather than a direct site visit. That makes WhatsApp broadcast lists, shareable offer graphics, and social content built to be forwarded genuinely more valuable during this window than in a normal month. If a business hasn't set up WhatsApp Business or hasn't built any kind of subscriber list before the season starts, that's worth fixing first.
- Build or clean up a WhatsApp broadcast list ahead of the season, not during it.
- Prepare shareable, forward-friendly offer graphics, not just standard ad creative.
- Post festive content consistently in the weeks leading up to the peak, not only on the day.
Make sure inventory and landing pages can handle the spike
Nothing wastes a festive campaign faster than driving traffic to a page that's slow, or to a product that's actually out of stock. Before any campaign goes live, check that the landing pages it points to load quickly, that stock levels and offer details are accurate, and that the checkout or enquiry flow has actually been tested, not just assumed to work because it worked the rest of the year.
Don't ignore the window-shoppers after the festival ends
A meaningful share of festive traffic browses without buying, comparing prices, waiting for a better offer, or simply getting distracted. Retargeting these visitors in the days after the main festival, often with a smaller, more targeted offer, recovers demand that a campaign focused only on the festival's peak day would otherwise leave on the table.
